Email Marketing Scout Guide
Email Segmentation: Split Your List Only When It Changes the Message
Segment subscribers by meaningful differences in interests, lifecycle, behavior, or customer status.
Independent guidance: We compare products by fit and documented capabilities. We do not claim firsthand testing unless a page explicitly describes a testing method.
Segmentation is a decision tool
A segment is useful when it changes what you send, when you send it, or what action you recommend. Otherwise it is just database decoration.
Common segmentation inputs
Signup source, stated interest, customer/non-customer status, product owned, lifecycle stage, engagement, geography when operationally relevant, and meaningful behavior.
Avoid over-segmentation
Tiny segments increase operational burden and can make reporting noisy. Start broad and split only when the experience improves.
Keep data current
Behavior and customer status change. Prefer data that can update automatically over one-time profile fields that become stale.
